My houseboat in Sausalito, California. Its name is CORBU because it was designed by a student of Le Corbusier. Frankly, it was beautiful, but a bit too tall to be standing in water. A light breeze could send breakfast sliding down the table.
Why a houseboat in California? I live in France. But I had lived in Mill Valley for a few months, writing a book. There, I met a man who loved me so much that he begged me buy a houseboat where we could live. We hunted and found Corbu on sale because of family reasons. So I bought it. I But it turned out to be an expensive bargain. The maintenance was way beyond my budget. The loving fiancé came to France with me and hated it. Refused to learn to say Bonjour. I sent him back to California. He went back to work and I sold the boat to Afeni Shakur.
By the time I was there (90's) the hippies had moved away to more affordable parts of California. The “Docks” had gentrified and my neighbors were all white bourgeois and quite well off. When I sold my boat to Afeni Shakur, Tupac’s mother (Black of course) they didn’t grouse about their “property values”. They only glared daggers at me. Guess I was lucky they didn’t lynch me.
Oh yeah. I was convinced I was doing the right thing. I was over 60 and acting like a school girl. I blush to think of that mistake.
